Nowadays, we are in a World where English is the most spoken language if we count among speakers those who use it as a second language and those who speak it as a mother tongue. However, it has not always been like this.
As we all know, during a large period of history, Latin was the language of literature, science and philosophy. It is basically due to the enormous intellectual fertility and artistic creation of Roman and Greek Civilizations.
Later in the history, a statement from a Spanish King can give us the picture of the situation in the 16th century. Charles V, after being asked in which language Spaniards used to pray, he answered in Spanish. Then he said he used French for diplomacy, Italian to talk to women, German to talk to his horse and Spanish to talk to God. This way he wanted to say that Spanish was the universal language according to the historical situation where Spain was the greatest power in the World.
In contrast, English is now the language everyone willing to be successful wants to master. The cause is believed to be found in an event called “First Industrial Revolution” in the 18th century which occurred firstly in the UK, an English peaking Country. Whilst Europe was immersed in other revolutions and wars, the UK took advantage of this situation and started to expand its influence in the world by developing an important industry based in machine-based manufacturing and iron production. As a result, production increased and trade evolved to a larger dimension. This change in trend was reinforced by the United States role in the News Technologies since the beginning of the 20th century.
Today to access a job you are very often required to speak English. So we could say that we have to use English for diplomacy, for trade, for marketing, for computing and even if you want to talk to Gods. As a result, we can state that English is an “almighty language” since one of the most powerful Countries on the Earth is Anglophone.
